The most common mistake any would be Discus lover make is to!
  • Having one tank but buying Discus from different source and putting them into that tank without quarantine.
  • Quarantine refers to isolating the new fish for a period of time, getting them adapted to your method of feeding and water changing before introducing them to your other fishes. (Once the fishes eat well and have black dropping and with regular water changes, you can introduce them into your tank. About one week) please used a different siphoning hose.
  • This is a must for the well been of the new fish as well as the existing ones. Reasons being your existing ones already adapted to your water change and feeding habits while the new fishes are not. So by putting the new with the old without quarantine, you are inviting trouble. When fishes are netted and transported they come under stress and by putting them into the tank with your other fishes, they might get sick thus infecting the rest of the fishes. (Turn dark, fin clamp, slime secretion) If this happens, remove the "new" fish and medicate it by using common salt with mentholen blue or Acriflavine, and lots of aeration. Do not feed for first two days because they will not eat and the food will pollute the water. (Do the same for your old fishes if necessary)
